... e da inconstância dos novilúnios no mesmo ano do ciclo, e isto através de 760 anos completos, que constituem 40 ciclos, contados desde o ano que precedia a *epocha* dionisiana, isto é, o primeiro do número áureo. Nesta Tabela, portanto, pode-se ver não apenas pela *epacta* como gradualmente ocorre o *hypolepsis* (recuo), não depois ou antes de 228 anos, mas ora antes, ora depois, conforme a *Epacta* cresce ou decresce. Pois não, como pensam os lilianos, por edito imperial os Novilúnios se afastam imediatamente da antiga *Epocha*, mas por uma tácita variedade do movimento Lunar, que não pode ser percebida senão pelo *character* do novilúnio. Se este não for empregado, e as *epactae* não forem corrigidas conforme ele, é forçoso pecar muito no ano Juliano, e muito mais gravemente no ano Trópico, devido à desigualdade da intercalação. Quanto os lilianos se afastaram do verdadeiro por ignorância dessas coisas, pode-se observar nesta Tabela. Para que, portanto, as *Epactae* sejam corrigidas, deve-se empregar a Tabela segunda do Capítulo terceiro, da qual extrairás o *character* do novilúnio Pascal, tanto da parte anterior quanto da posterior: mas da posterior somente nos números áureos VIII, XI, XIX, porque por *antikatástasis* (substituição) Adar foi colocado no lugar de Nisan. A partir dessas duas partes da Tabela, qualquer um pode propagar tabelas perpétuas dos novilúnios, sem qualquer trabalho, quase num único golpe de vista, anotando-se na primeira linha do ciclo de dezenove anos o Número Áureo, na segunda a *litera Dominicalis*, na terceira o *character*, ou *feria* do novilúnio, na quarta a *epacta* sarracênica corrigida, como fizemos nesta Tabela. Por fim, três coisas principais devem ser observadas na construção do ano Niceno: a disposição das *epactae* no contexto do ano Juliano, como por nós foi instituído, começando por Março, em cujas Calendas se põe a *Epacta* literata XXIX, Sarracênica 0. Em segundo, deve-se instituir o ciclo *Tetraetericus* das *literae Dominicales*, das quais a primeira é dupla AG: e que não se intercale antes que se completem os dias a partir das horas e escrúpulos, mas que a *litera Dominicalis* seja buscada a partir da *tetracosieteris* equinocial, cujo exemplo apresentamos acima. Em terceiro, que as *epactae* sejam corrigidas conforme os *characterismi* da Tabela segunda do Capítulo terceiro. Pois embora muitas coisas devam ser consideradas nesta doutrina, todas se reduzem a estes três capítulos. Belíssima é esta doutrina, que devia ter sido tratada por outro que não Clávio, pois, mal concebida por Lílio, ele a contaminou de modo ainda pior, e nela imprimiu muitas marcas de sua ignorância, como são as reuniões de *epactae* num mesmo dia 25, XXVI; e ainda XXV, XXIIII, e a transição da *epacta* XXV para a XXIII, e outros delírios, que ninguém minimamente inteligente nessas matérias pode ver em uso no Calendário sem rir, nem sem indignação. Tão grande foi a ignorância em admitir o erro, tão grande é a obstinação em defendê-lo. O que Clávio bastante declarou em suas estercóreas apologias, nas quais não confessou outra coisa senão que, dentre tantos erros, alguns por estupor não reconhece, e os que reconhece, por impudência se recusa a confessar.

... and concerning the inconstancy of new moons in the same year of the cycle, and this through 760 completed years, which make 40 cycles, reckoned from the year preceding the Dionysian *epocha*, namely the first of the Golden Number. In this Table, therefore, one can see not only by the *epacta* how gradually the *hypolepsis* (regression) occurs — not after or before 228 years, but sometimes before, sometimes after, as the *Epacta* increases or decreases. For not, as the Lilians think, by imperial edict do the New Moons immediately retreat from the ancient *Epocha*, but by a silent variation of the Lunar motion, which can be perceived only through the *character* of the new moon. If this is not employed, and the *epactae* are not adjusted to it, much error necessarily occurs in the Julian year, but far more grievously in the Tropical year, due to the inequality of intercalation. How far the Lilians have strayed from the truth through ignorance of these matters can be observed from this Table. Therefore, in order that the *Epactae* may be corrected, the second Table of the third Chapter must be employed, from which you will draw the *character* of the Paschal new moon, both of the prior part and the posterior: but of the posterior only in golden numbers VIII, XI, XIX, because by *antikatastasis* (substitution) Adar was put in place of Nisan. From these two parts of the Table, anyone can construct perpetual tables of new moons without any labor, almost at a single glance, by noting in the first row of the nineteen-year cycle the Golden Number, in the second the *litera Dominicalis*, in the third the *character* or *feria* of the new moon, in the fourth the corrected Saracenic *epacta*, as we have done in this Table. Finally, three principal things are to be observed in the construction of the Nicene year: the arrangement of the *epactae* in the context of the Julian year, as it has been instituted by us, beginning with March, on whose Kalends is placed the lettered *Epacta* XXIX, Saracenic 0. Second, the *Tetraeteric* cycle of the *literae Dominicales* must be instituted, of which the first is double AG: nor should intercalation occur until the day is completed from hours and scruples, but the *litera Dominicalis* should be drawn from the equinoctial *tetracosieteris*, whose example we have given above. Third, that the *epactae* be corrected according to the *characterismi* of the second Table of the third Chapter. For although many matters must be considered in this doctrine, all reduce to these three heads. Most beautiful is this doctrine, which ought to have been treated by another than Clavius, since, ill conceived by Lilius, he contaminated it in a worse manner, and impressed upon it many traces of his ignorance, such as the gatherings of *epactae* on a single day 25, XXVI; likewise XXV, XXIIII, and the transition from the XXV to the XXIII *epacta*, and other deliriums, which no one even slightly informed in these matters can see in use in the Calendar without laughter, nor without indignation. So great was the ignorance in admitting the fault, so great is the obstinacy in defending it. Which Clavius sufficiently declared in his dunghill apologies, in which he confessed nothing else than that, of so many errors, some he does not recognize through stupor, and those he does recognize, he refuses through impudence to confess.
FOURTH TABLE OF THE *CHARACTERISMUS*.] I have nothing further to say about this. For the method is the same as that of the Second of the third Chapter.
