Memorize this technical verse: *Ast deserta gemit Karthago. Mars prope sauit*. The letter A, as you cannot fail to know, being the first letter of the alphabet, indicates that intercalation took place in the first year of the cycle, namely before the *neomenia* of the first year. That is, the preceding year had XIII months, and what was the second month in the preceding year is the first in the first year; and the same in cycle-years III, VII, X, XII, XV, XVIII, as the letters denote.
CANON TWO.
Given a *Hagarene* year, to know its first month.
From the given years subtract all *Hagarene periodi*. In the remainder, see how many cycles have elapsed and which year of the current cycle is the proposed one. For each cycle take seven months; to these add the embolisms of the current cycle. The sum of months, if it does not reach XII, shows which month of the *Laterculus* is the first of the given year. If the sum exceeds XII, the last of the remaining months is the first of the year.
Let us resume the example of the proposed year 1652. Subtracting seven *periodi*, that is 1956 years, 56 remain. That is two cycles together with 18 years of the running cycle. In the two past cycles twice seven embolisms have flowed, that is XIV Arabic months have been intercalated. The 18th year of the running cycle is itself also *embolimaeus* and the last of the *embolimaei*, as is shown by the letter S, the first letter of the last word SAEVIT in the technical verse. Seven embolisms, therefore, of this running cycle too have flowed; which together with the XIV months of the two past cycles make XXI months, that is one year and IX months. The last of these remaining months, namely the ninth, is Dulkadathi. Therefore Dulkadathi is the first month of the proposed *Hagarene* year 1652.

To convert given *Hagarene* years into *retexti* years.
From the given years subtract all *periodi*: namely all multiples of 228. For each *periodus* take 235 *retexti* years. In the remainder, see how many cycles have flowed, how many embolisms therefrom, and from the months of the elapsed years of the current cycle make years, if they reach XII.
From the years proposed in the example above, seven *periodi* were subtracted. Seven times 235 yields 1645 *retexti* years. From the remainder of elapsed years, two cycles flowed, and XIV embolisms, by the preceding doctrine, and VI embolisms from the elapsed years of the running cycle. These make 20 months, that is one year and VIII months. Therefore 55 years plus one year and VIII months make 56 *retexti* years with VIII months. These, combined with 1645, give 1701 *retexti* years with VIII months, as above in Canon four.
