It is fitting also to record in order and with precision, by way of commentary, the oracle given to Zacharias concerning John the Baptist, which we mentioned earlier, [indicating] in what solar and lunar year it occurred. To those who attend, it stands clear that each [event] is prior to the nativity of the Savior—namely, in the 16th [year] of the sun and the 9th of the moon, in the month of September according to the Romans, the 18th [month reckoning], having the twenty-seventh [day of the month], and being the fifth day of the week. For the very same solar and lunar year of John's nativity was that in which the nativity of the Savior occurred, though the month was manifestly different, being June and having the twenty-fourth [day]; and the day of the week was the second. Again, as to his consummation—that is, his beheading—it was in the 17th [year] of the sun and the 4th of the moon, in the month of August, having the twenty-ninth [day], and the third day of the week. So that the years of the Savior according to the flesh are 33 years and 89 days, and those of John the Baptist 33 years, the days being 26 fewer in comparison with the days of the Savior.
