The kings of the Chaldeans, however, as set down by Berossus in Josephus and by Megasthenes in Eusebius, must be carefully investigated, and it must be examined whether they agree with Daniel. For by those two most ancient writers the same kings are enumerated with the same names, with the same number of syllables, and with the same number of years, so that there can be no suspicion of error. But since this question involves the variety of Babylonian names, certain things must first be discussed concerning them, so that the truth, if possible, may be brought to light. Chaldean and Assyrian proper names are almost all composite. Rarely does a simple one occur. They are composed, however, of two, three, and at most four simple names. We have placed below, under a single view, the series of simple Chaldean and Assyrian names.
