SOBRE O VII CONSULADO DE HONÓRIO.
Em Augusta dos Tréveros, na Basílica Pauliniana, existe uma inscrição deste teor, deformadíssima, como é claro. Tal como a julgamos dever ser lida, colocamo-la abaixo: [Ἐνθάδε κεῖται Εὐσεβία ἐν εἰρήνῃ οὖσα ἱερακωμῖτις ἀπὸ Κώμης Ἀδδάνων, ζήσασα μικρὸν πρὸς ἔτη ιε. ὑπατείᾳ Ὀνωρίου τὸ η, καὶ Κωνσταντίνου τὸ α. μηνὶ Πανέμου ιβ ἡμέρᾳ κι. β ἐν εἰρήνῃ.] "Aqui jaz Eusébia em paz, sendo hieracomita da Aldeia dos Ádanos, tendo vivido pouco menos de 15 anos, no consulado VIII de Honório e I de Constantino, no dia 21 do mês de Pâneme, em paz." As últimas palavras parecem significar [κεῖται βεβαίως ἐν εἰρήνῃ] "jaz firmemente em paz". Muitos fazem menção a [Ἀδδάνων] Ádana na Cilícia, que hoje tem bispo sob o Patriarca de Constantinopla. Portanto, nos tempos de Honório era apenas uma Aldeia [Κώμη], e de fato com o cognome [ἱερά] "sagrada", donde os habitantes dos Ádanos serem chamados Hierocomitas. Outros eram os Hieracomitas na jurisdição de Pérgamo, distintos destes Adanocomitas. Pergunto, pois, quem seja esse Constantino, colega de Honório em seu sétimo Consulado. Pois Marcelino, Próspero e Cassiodoro apresentam como colega de Honório em seu sétimo Consulado Teodósio como Cônsul pela segunda vez; aliás, no próprio Código Teodosiano o próprio Honório coloca-se como VII cônsul ao lado de Teodósio II. Sei que está à mão o refúgio comum e usual, a saber, que aquele Constantino teria sido cônsul sufecto. A mim, porém, não me parece assim, e julgo que muitas coisas foram acrescentadas ou omitidas indevidamente na lista destes Cônsules. Assim, no Código Teodosiano, livro XI, Tít. XXVIII, Eutrópio, varão clarissimo, é apresentado como Cônsul junto com Valentiniano Augusto III. Já Marcelino, no livro XXVIII, Sócrates, livro IV, Cassiodoro e os Fastos Sicilianos apresentam como colega de Consulado Valente Augusto III com Valentiniano Augusto III. Na constituição dos Imperadores Honório e Teodósio Augustos, no livro XI do Código Teodosiano, visto que, desde setembro do ano de Cristo 370, corretamente se considera começar a Indicção XIV, depois, a partir de setembro do consulado de Honório VII e Teodósio II, começa a Indicção IV: a qual corresponde ao ano de Cristo 405, e justamente a partir de setembro, ano em que se coloca o segundo Consulado de Estilicão. A não ser que, em lugar de Indicção IV, leiamos VI, não vejo como remediar este erro, se isto não for verdadeiro. At Augusta Treverorum (Trier), in the Pauline Basilica, there exists an inscription of this sort, most disgracefully defaced, as is clear. As we think it should be read, we set it down below: [Ἐνθάδε κεῖται Εὐσεβία ἐν εἰρήνῃ οὖσα ἱερακωμῖτις ἀπὸ Κώμης Ἀδδάνων, ζήσασα μικρὸν πρὸς ἔτη ιε. ὑπατείᾳ Ὀνωρίου τὸ η, καὶ Κωνσταντίνου τὸ α. μηνὶ Πανέμου ιβ ἡμέρᾳ κι. β ἐν εἰρήνῃ.] "Here lies Eusebia in peace, being a Hieracomite from the Village of the Addani, having lived a little less than 15 years, in the VIII consulship of Honorius and the I of Constantine, on the 21st day of the month Panemus, in peace." The last words seem to mean [κεῖται βεβαίως ἐν εἰρήνῃ] "she lies firmly in peace." Many mention [Ἀδδάνων] Addana in Cilicia, which today has a bishop under the Patriarch of Constantinople. For Marcellinus, Prosper, and Cassiodorus set alongside Honorius in his seventh Consulship Theodosius as Consul for the second time; indeed, in the Theodosian Code Honorius himself places himself as VII alongside Theodosius II. I know that a common and usual refuge lies ready at hand: namely, that this Constantine was a suffect consul. To me, however, it does not so appear, and I judge that many things have been wrongly added or omitted in the case of these Consuls. Thus in the Theodosian Code, book XI, Title XXVIII, Eutropius, a most illustrious man, is set as Consul together with Valentinian Augustus III. But Marcellinus, in book XXVIII, Socrates in book IV, Cassiodorus, and the Sicilian Fasti set as consular colleagues Valens Augustus III together with Valentinian Augustus III. In the constitution of the Emperors Honorius and Theodosius Augusti, in book XI of the Theodosian Code, since from September of the year of Christ 370 the XIV Indiction is rightly reckoned to begin, afterwards, from September of the Consulship of Honorius VII and Theodosius II, the IV Indiction begins — which corresponds to the year of Christ 405, and indeed from September, the year in which the second Consulship of Stilicho is placed. Unless in place of Indiction IV we read VI, I do not see how we can remedy this error, if this is not true.
