SOBRE O CONSULADO DE AUSÔNIO.
O consulado de Ausônio é o décimo quinto depois do consulado de Joviano e Varroniano Augustos. Portanto o consulado de Ausônio cai no ano 379 de Cristo, na sétima indicção, como corretamente registra Marcelino, que tomou o início de sua Crônica a partir do consulado de Ausônio e Olíbrio, e, visto que atribui a cada colégio consular suas respectivas indicções, nada temos hoje mais perfeito naquele gênero. Epifânio: [ὧν ἔτη μέχρι τῆς Ἀρκαδίου ὑπατείας τῆς δευτέρας ἢ Ῥουφίνου ἀριθμοῦνται ργ΄...] "dos quais se contam 103 anos até o segundo consulado de Arcádio e o de Rufino; em cujo tempo faleceu Valentiniano o Jovem, filho de Valentiniano o Grande, subitamente enforcado no palácio, conforme se diz, nos idos de maio, um dia antes de Pentecostes, em dia de sábado. Mas é obscuro o que Epifânio acrescenta: que foi no 23º dia de Artemísio segundo os gregos, isto é, os sírio-gregos. Pois era 16, e não 23. Artemísio siro-macedônico é exatamente o Maio juliano. ON THE CONSULSHIP OF AUSONIUS.
The consulship of Ausonius is the fifteenth after the consulship of Jovian and Varronianus, Augusti. Therefore Ausonius's consulship falls in the year of Christ 379, in the seventh indiction, as Marcellinus correctly records—he who began his Chronicle from the consulship of Ausonius and Olybrius; and since he assigns to each consular college its own indiction, we have today nothing more perfect of that kind. Would that we had all the Roman Fasti annotated with equal diligence in their characteristics. Accordingly, that little book is the standard for chronology from Ausonius's consulship down to the last times of Justinian. But it is obscure what Epiphanius adds: that it was the 23rd day of Artemisius according to the Greeks, that is, the Syro-Greeks. For it was the 16th, not the 23rd.
