What shall I say of those who, having read in the earlier edition our opinion concerning the death of Herod and concerning this lunar eclipse, surmised that we had erred both as to the year of Herod and as to the time of the eclipse? Those men we bid enjoy their own judgment. Upon us falls the duty of upholding truth, which it is never right to betray. What could be better demonstrated than what we have demonstrated here? As for what that Annius writes in the character of his straw-man Philo — that Herod reigned forty years: thirty-four as a tyrant and six legitimately — although that oracle reveals not only the remarkable impudence of the Monk but also his ignorance, yet I marvel not so much at what was fabricated by that man, who set himself to deceive good men, as at his having found followers — men not to be despised — who, failing to notice that it had been fabricated by a most brazen man, did not hesitate to transfer it into their own writings as if it were some precious emblem. Whom does he call a legitimate king? Does he not know that one who has been declared King by the Roman Senate has never been anything but legitimate? Let him instruct us how that king was not legitimate who receives his kingdom by law and by decree of the Senate. As to Herod's nature having been tyrannical at the end of his life, and at his last times far more than at the beginning of his reign — who would deny it, the same man who ordered his sons killed by their father, and would he deny it to be a tyrannical deed to have had innocent little boys slaughtered at their mothers' breasts? But not so much has been plainly said against him as against those who today, amid such a light of letters, seeing and being prudent, allow themselves to be imposed upon by his books — those who think no chronicle to be good except one stuffed together from Berosus, Metasthenes, Xenophon, Myrtilus, and similar Annian prodigies. To draw examples or authority from those refuse heaps is to proclaim one's own ignorance through a herald. Whoever is charmed by the writings of Annius can have neither judgment nor any sense of letters.
