Grande gratidão obtêm da posteridade aqueles que abrem o caminho para descobertas ilustres, ainda que a seus esforços falte o êxito. Foi descoberta de Meton que, em duzentas e trinta e cinco sizígias, a Lua retorna ao mesmo ponto do Sol. ON METON'S SOLSTICE AND THE FIRST YEAR OF HIS ENNEADECAETERIS.
Those who pave the way to illustrious discoveries earn great gratitude from posterity, even if success fails their own efforts. It was Meton's discovery that in two hundred and thirty-five syzygies the Moon returns to the same point of the Sun. Although this was afterwards found faulty in many respects, neither Callippus, who corrected Meton, nor Hipparchus, who reformed Callippus's period, childishly boasted nor dismissed their excellent arguments with invectives; rather, as we gather from the remnants of Hipparchus preserved in Ptolemy, regard is had both for Meton's and for Callippus's reputation. One will not find such humanity in the Critics of our time, who, being in no way polished by the cultivation of letters, have joined to the incivility of their manners the utmost ignorance of literature. And yet, if you listen to them, they alone are [ἀναμάρτητοι] "infallible," and therefore more unjust toward others' errors. But I fear to make mention of them in so noble a place, to whom the greatest honor would accrue if I somehow inserted their name here. Meton, then, having perceived the defect of Harpalus's Octaeteris, whose reckonings were already tottering, established from a double Octaeteris and thirty-seven syzygies a new lunar cycle, whose head he set not from the winter solstice, as Harpalus, but from the [summer] solstice. Ingeniously he awaited the year in which the neomenia of Gamelion would fall upon the ancient brumal epoch of the Athenians, from which Harpalus had begun his Octaeteris. For the ancient brumal epoch was on January 7 and 8. In Harpalus's time the neomenia [Γαμηλιῶνος κατὰ σελήνην] "of Gamelion according to the Moon," beginning near that epoch, that is, on January 8 or 9, fell on the eighth of our lunar cycle. Therefore Meton too began his own period from such a cycle, in which Lunar Gamelion coincided with the ancient brumal epoch, or fell very close to it. In year 317 of Nabonassar, on the ninth of Pharmuthi, [Σκιρροφοριῶνος τρίτῃ ἐπὶ δέκα] "on the 13th of Skirrophorion," in the second year of the Attic period, in year 40 of the fifth Olympic period, [Γορπιαίου τριακάδι] "on the 30th of Gorpiaios," in the year 4282 of the Julian period, July 15, fifth weekday, Solar cycle 26, Lunar 7; in the Jewish year 3329: whose Ab 5.20.120, which ought to have been transferred [ἀστρονομικῶς] "astronomically" to the sixth weekday on account of 20 hours; but Meton placed it on the fifth weekday. Karkinonos 18, of year 3518 from the creation of the world: whose Zygon 3.3. 11´, on September 29.
