Até aqui o intervalo do Século Romano foi corretamente observado pelos Romanos. Os Príncipes que se seguiram terminaram a duração do Século segundo seu arbítrio. Os primeiros Jogos Seculares foram celebrados no ano da Cidade 198. Deduzindo-se deles o intervalo de um Século, resta o ano da Cidade 188 [CLXXXVIII], que era o décimo ano do rei Sérvio Túlio — tempo em que não duvidamos ter sido por ele instituído o primeiro lustro. Pois, quanto ao que se encontra escrito em Censorino — que do primeiro lustro até o último, realizado no ano da Cidade 806 [DCCCVI], sendo cônsules o Imperador Vespasiano Pai pela quinta vez e o Filho pela terceira —, decorreram pouco menos de seiscentos e cinquenta anos: isto é antes erro do copista do que de Censorino. Pois, desse modo, Sérvio Túlio teria instituído o lustro no início de seu reinado, o que todos me concederão ser falso. Thus far the interval of the Roman Saeculum was correctly observed by the Romans. The Princes who followed ended the length of the Saeculum according to their own caprice. The first Secular Games were held in the year of the City 198. Subtracting from this the interval of one Saeculum, there remains the year of the City 188 [CLXXXVIII], which was the tenth year of King Servius Tullius—at which time we do not doubt that the first lustrum was instituted by him. For as to what stands written in Censorinus—that from the first lustrum to the last, which was held in the year of the City 806 [DCCCVI], under the consulship of Emperor Vespasian the Father for the fifth time and the Son for the third—there elapsed a little less than six hundred and fifty years: this is rather an error of the copyist than of Censorinus. For on that reckoning Servius Tullius would have instituted the lustrum at the very beginning of his reign, which all will grant me to be false. We maintain with every assurance not only that the first lustrum was instituted in the tenth year of Tullius, but also that from this point the origin of the Secular Games must be derived. For if the origin of the Secular Games must be referred to this point, what better could prove it—

De quibus deducto vnius Saeculi interuallo, relinquitur annus Vrbis CLXXXVIII, qui erat annus Serui Tullii Regis decimus. quo tempore non dubitamus, primum lustrum ab eo conditum.
