For the Ox or Bull is indeed the second year both in the Tartar Dodecaeteris and in our own. But the Dragon is the third in the Tartar one, whereas it is the fifth in ours. The Dog is next-to-last in ours, and the fourth in the Tartar one. The Lion, however, is the first in the Tartar one, and has no place at all in ours. Ignatius, Patriarch of Antioch, a most accomplished man — for I cannot call him otherwise, since he was the most perfect exemplar of all doctrine and virtues —, this most eminent man, writing to me in the year of Christ 1581, informed me that that year was the sixth of that Dodecaeteris, and named after the Serpent. I would also adduce his own words, did I not fear to spoil them by the fault of my own wit. For I would not attain in Latin what he most elegantly set forth in his Arabic tongue. I shall however append the Diagram of that dodecaeteric period, first drawn up by him in five languages, and then rendered by us into Latin.
