For those who once accustom themselves to use these characters will experience what constancy and reliability this most beautiful method possesses in the computation of times. If anyone, in this year of Christ 1594, uncertain of how old he is, yet knows himself to be older than forty-nine years and younger than fifty-six, he imitates the ineptitude of the Greek chronologers, who say that this and that happened about the times of this or that king, but do not determine a definite year. But when the same person adds that he was born on the Nones of August, on the fifth weekday (Thursday), he adds a sure and undoubted character, such as are the twenty [πρίται ἡμέραι] "former days" of Ephorus. For Thursday could not fall on the Nones of August except when the Dominical letter is C. Now, 49 years ago this happened in the year of the Lord 1540, in the ninth year of the solar cycle. Therefore, by this characterism we affirm with the utmost constancy that in that year the man was born, and that on the next Julian Nones of August he will enter his fifty-fifth birthday. The same use of the lunar cycle, with due correction applied, requires that from the first Olympiad to the year of the Lord 1400, you add as many days to the new moons as there are occurrences of 304 years. For example: this is the 2370th year from the first Olympiad. In those years, the number 304 is found seven times. Therefore, seven days are to be added to today's new moons.
